Is there such a thing as a type of "virtual" extension that I can register my application as and then place multiple concurrent calls using it? What I'm trying to accomplish is registering my DMCC app as an extension, place a call, and when it's answered play a recording. The problem is I want to place multiple calls at the same time to different destinations. Does my app have to register at and use a different extension for every outgoing call that I want to make?

You will need different extension for every call. Of course, once you no longer need an extension on a call, you can disconnect it and use it on another call.
